Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

This Thursday's Thanks goes to someone that you may not see very often during the day, but if you're walking around the Landing at night- you're almost sure to see him!

This Thursday's Thanks goes out to Officer Hodge of the UNCW Police Department.  Officer Hodge is our Police and Community Networking (PAC'N) officer for the Landing.  He does rounds with the RAs at night, meet with me to hear about issues occurring in the Landing, and just gets out to meet students whenever possible.

We appreciate all the work Officer Hodge puts in to helping keep the Landing safe and educate our residents about their own safety and security!  A big Thursday's Thanks to Officer Hodge from all of us here in the Landing!

Until next time...

Green Team

Good morning, everyone!

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for emptying all of the blue recycling bins in the residential areas?  Well, the answer is students like you!

In the Fall of 2008 the Housing and Residence Life Green Team was formed. The Green Team is made up of students who have taken on the responsibility of operating the recycling program in the residential facilities. These student workers are managing the daily operations of a growing recycling program as well as assisting in educational programming regarding environmental sustainability. The Green Team has worked to make recycling as easy as possible for residential students through the use of creative and clear signage, keeping containers emptied regularly, and promoting the overall positive effect that recycling can have on our campus community and beyond.

Look for a community-wide program coming your way soon where you'll be able to make/decorate your own recycling container and you'll learn much more from the Green Team about recycling practices!

Until next time...

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

We're back for another edition of Thursday's Thanks here at the Landing!

This week we would like to give a big Thursday's Thanks to Caleb Lewis!  Caleb is a resident of Building 1 here in the Landing.  He is also on the executive board of the Residence Hall Association and is the Office Assistant for the office staff in the Landing!  Caleb does a lot to make our living experience on campus more positive, and provides a lot of support to the staff through the work he does in our office!  Caleb's positive attitude and love for UNCW makes it a pleasure to work with him and have him as a member of our community.

So, to Caleb Lewis, we say THANKS for all you do!  :)

Until next time...

Graduate and Law School Day

Good morning, everyone!

I know a number of you are thinking about furthering your education after you leave UNCW.  For many of you this may mean Graduate school and possibly Law school.  With this in mind, the Career Services office is offering an event for students interested in graduate and law school.

Representatives from campuses throughout the region will provide information on applying and getting accepted into their schools. This event is sponsored in collaboration with UNCW Graduate school and Public and International Affairs Department.

This event will be held Monday, November 1 from 10am-2pm in the Burney Center.  I hope some of you will be able to stop by and receive information from schools in our region.

Until next time...

Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program

Good morning, everyone!

I want to take some time this morning to share with you all about a service initiative that is being started here on UNCW's campus.  The Housing and Residence Life office has started a service project called My Teal Hands.  This is a program geared toward getting residential students at UNCW out into the community doing service work with our teal hands.  Each residential area has selected a different group to work with for the year.

Here in the Landing we have selected the Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program. CTRP is a non-profit program, teaching therapeutic and recreational horseback riding to children and adults with special needs.

This past Saturday, the RA staff of the Landing went out to CTRP and did a few hours of work- we had a great time!  We were able to help clean up the stables, work with the horses, and help with some of the children/adults riding horses.  Below you will see some pictures from our day at CTRP.
It is our hope to get many of you involved with this service initiative as well.  Look for more information coming soon from your RA.  If you'd like to hear more about the program, feel free to drop by my office any time and speak with me about it!

Until next time...

Leadership & Diversity

Good morning, everyone!

Are you interested in developing your leadership skills or further educating yourself on the topic of diversity?  If so, you should consider attending a workshop taking place today at 12 noon in the Cape Fear room in the University Union room 2019.

Join Campus Activties and Involvement to explore the need for making the connection between leadership and diversity. Participants will increase their leadership abilities by gaining an awareness of common challenges as they relate to leadership and diversity, identify personal triggers, and learn what it means to have and work with multiple identities. In addition, specific ideas for future action steps will be presented as a way of further developing one's own leadership abilities.

Until next time...

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

This week for our Thursday's Thanks we're going to recognize one of our very own Seahawk Landing residents!  Graduate Assistant Tyler Millard will be our recipient this week!

Last week, Tyler and his father volunteered their time and talent to play a show out on the Landing Seal for all of the Landing residents.  Many residents stopped by on their way to the sandwich shop to listen in, opened their bedroom windows to enjoy the show from their window, and I even saw Cornerstone residents open their windows to listen in to the music.

Tyler has also taken time out of his busy graduate schedule to attend programs, socials, and Area Chapter celebrations to add to his active involvement in the community of the Seahawk Landing!  So a big Thursday Thanks to Tyler for all he does here in the Landing and for a great show last Thursday!!

Until next time...

You will find this event at the Seahawk Village Clubhouse/Pool on Friday from 3-5 pm.  This event was supposed to happen on Thursday, but due to the chance of rain, it has been moved to Friday afternoon!

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Good morning, everyone!

An important event is taking place in Wilmington this weekend.  The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will be taking place this Saturday!  It is not too late to sign up and register to walk.  Or, even consider coming out to cheer on the walkers.  Click here to go to the event's webiste and learn more about registering!

"Your involvement with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is as unique and special as the story that motivates you. Each step you take is personal. And each step is helping to save lives. More than a walk, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event describes the progress we’re making together to save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays."

I hope some of you will consider walking or cheering on the walkers this weekend!
