We recently received a comment here at the blog asking if we'd ever be posting about events happening during the summer.  It wasn't in the plans to do so, but because you've asked for it, we will do it!!!

You can tune in every Monday to see what is going on around campus that week!

There is an over-arching programming effort that takes place during the summer at UNCW called Summer at the Dub.  You can check-out the website by clicking here.

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

This week the Landing staff would like to take some time to thank Residence Coordinator Danielle Page!  Daniell is in charge of HRL's Staff Recognition committee and has spent the whole year recognizing other people so we'd like to recognize her this week!

Danielle helped to plan all of our recognition weeks for professional staff, students, administrative staff, etc.  She also planned the 3.5 banquets for students with over a 3.5 gpa in the Fall semester and the end of the year banquet for RAs!  Daniell also spends time as the RC in the Seahawk Village!

For ALL you've done to thank everyone else this year, we say THANKS to Danielle Page!

New Chancellor Annoucement

The Board of Governors of the UNC System will meet in special session at UNCW on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, to elect and announce the next chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The meeting will convene at 2 p.m. in Room 162 of the Education Building. This is an open meeting, but a short part of the meeting will be conducted in closed session in order for the board to hear the report of the Committee on Personnel and Tenure.
The campus community is invited to a special reception following the Board of Governors meeting to welcome the "chancellor elect" to campus. Light refreshments will be available in the atrium of the Education Building starting at approximately 3 p.m. Please plan to attend and help provide an enthusiastic Seahawk welcome for UNCW's next leader.
The announcement of the new chancellor at the board meeting will be live streamed on the UNCW website so that everyone can have the opportunity to watch this historic event. The URL for the live stream is http://uncwtv.uncw.edu/bog.html.

Because of the closed session agenda, it is not known exactly when the live feed will be available—streaming will begin as soon as the board meeting comes back into open session. In addition to posting online, the live announcement may be viewed on campus TVs on Channel 77.

TV Survey

Good morning, everyone!

In the last 24-48 hours, you should have received an email requesting that you fill out a survey regarding the TV offerings at UNCW.  We are urging that you fill out this survey because it could have a huge impact on TV channels and HD offerings!  The better response the university gets to the survey, the more likely they are to listen to your feedback.

If you need a computer to access the survey from, please feel free to come to the Landing office to complete the survey.  Also, we will be set-up in the office on Tuesday, April 26 from 8-9:30 pm asking students to fill out the TV survey!

UNCW Campus Sustainability Garden

On Tuesday April 19, members of the UNCW community will take the first steps toward growing a campus sustainability garden. The Sustainability Committee welcomes volunteers to assist in the assembly of raised and transferring topsoil to the containers and beds on from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. Please bring shovels, hoes, rakes and comfortable outdoor work attire. Volunteers who would like to later assist in tending the garden are also welcome.
The garden will be located between the Kresge Greenhouse and Friday Hall. Phase I will consist of 12 planters and four raised beds. Approximately 10-14 additional raised beds will be installed in Phase II (planned for May or June).

Students and members of the UNCW Sustainability Committee have been working on the concept of a community garden on campus for several years. Faculty from the departments of geography and geology, biological sciences and environmental studies have worked together providing teaching experiences and experiential learning to make this an academic endeavor.
Produce from this organic garden will ultimately be used for select campus dining events and donated to community charities. Funding is provided by donations to the UNCW Sustainability Fund.

Consider going out on Tuesday to help with Phase I of the gardening!

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

This week's Thursday's Thanks goes to Rita Gordon.  Rita is in charge of auxiliary services which includes parking, cable television, and parking!  Rita took time out of her busy schedule this week to come to the RHA meeting to discuss with residential students the current policies and upcoming changes.  Rita also asked students for more feedback, which is always appreciated!

Also, Rita was spotted by many students last week our directing traffic, parking cars, and helping with parking enforcement!  That is true leadership to hit the ground running and not just have members doing the work! Thanks for leading by example, Rita!

Media Swap

Good morning, everyone!

I want to take this opportunity to make you aware of a program that will be happening here in the Landing this weekend that you may be interested in!  It's called the Seahawk Media Swap!

The premise behind the program is that you'll be able to turn in old CDs, DVDs, books, video games, etc. that you don't want any more.  Each one that you turn in will earn you one ticket.  Then, you'll be able to get a new CD, DVD, book or video game for each ticket earn- you'll swap your media!

This event is taking place on Sunday from 3-5 PM on the Landing Seal.  The RA staff will come around the buildings this week  to collect the media you want to swap and hand out the tickets.  There is also a drop box in the office if you want to drop your swap items there.

So, if you have a little down time from classes, consider going through your old things and decide what you'd like to swap for next month!

For those of you who are beginning to think about what classes you'd like to take next semester, you'll want to know that the Fall 2011 class schedule will be available on SeaNet starting on April 11.

Good morning, everyone!

This Thursday, we'd like to give a big Landing Thursday's Thanks to the Area Chapter of the Seahawk Landing!  The Area Chapter has worked hard to collect food for Mother Hubbard's Cuboard over the past several months by going door to door around the Landing.  The Area Chapter has also put on a number of great programs for our area.  This includes the roommate game that they put on last week and had a great turnout!

Thanks for volunteering for your positions and working hard for the residents of the Landing!  We look forward to what you'll bring to the area in the future...including Movie Night: Despicable Me at the Landing Pool on March 31!

Here's a big Thursday's Thanks to the Landing Area Chapter!

Until next time...

Seahawk Media Swap

Good morning, everyone!

I want to take this opportunity to make you aware of a program that will be happening here in the Landing next month that you may be interested in!

This event is taking place on Wednesday, April 6 from 3-5 PM on the Landing Seal.  The RA staff will come around the buildings the week before to collect the media you want to swap and hand out the tickets.

So, as you're headed home for Spring Break or have a little down time from classes, consider going through your old things and decided what you'd like to swap for next month!

Until next time...

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

This week for our Thursday's Thanks, I'd like to share that this week is National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week.

This week, I also learned of a book titled, "365 Thank Yous"by John Kralik. Kralik wrote 365 thank yous in a one year's time. The book tells the story of the difference that was made in Kralik's life by saying thank you more often. (credit: http://www.houseofshine.com/)

Maybe you will consider checking out the book.  Or maybe you will decide to celebrate National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week by sending at least one note or letter of Thanks this Thursday!

Thursday's Thanks

Good morning, everyone!

We're back for another Thursday's Thanks!  This is the time of the week when the Landing staff takes time to thank someone on campus that has made an impact on our Landing community!

This week, the Landing staff would like to send a big thank you to Vice Chancellor Pat Leonard!  Here's what the Landing staff had to say about the Vice Chancellor!

"I love how she really wants to know each student personally and her face is familiar around campus!"
"I'm thankful for her because she is my role model of who I want to be in my student affairs career."
"I love VCPL because every time she sees me, she says hello and her interactions with me are very genuine.  She does not just make small talk, but remembers thing about my life and shows she cares about me."
"I appreciate that VCPL gets right in and works with the students throughout campus- like at Late Night Breakfast during Homecoming!"

Vice Chancellor, thanks for everything you do and everything you will continue to do!  A big Landing Thursday's Thanks to you!

Attention: Graduating Seniors

Good morning,

This post in particular is for the graduating seniors living in Seahawk Landing.  Below is an email you should have received from Nate Miner regarding when you'd like to move out of the Landing this summer.  Please read the email below if you have not yet and respond to him as soon as possible!

Dear Senior,

According to our records you are eligible for graduation on December 11, 2010. As a graduating senior, you are eligible to cancel the remaining portion of your housing contract/lease agreement which would release you from your remaining financial responsibility with Housing and Residence Life. This leaves you with two options:

Option 1

You do NOT wish to cancel your housing contract as you will be continuing as a student at UNCW during the Spring Term. Please understand that this means you must be a full time UNCW student during the Spring 2011 term.

Option 2

You DO wish to cancel your housing contract as you will no longer be a full time UNCW student for Spring 2011. By choosing this option, you will NOT be held financially responsible for any remaining contractual obligations to Housing and Residence Life.
If you choose this option, you also understand that you will need to vacate your room by 10 a.m. on December 12, 2010.
No matter which option that you choose, you should look for information in your Residence Hall and from your RA about setting up a check-out appointment and following the correct procedure for vacating your room. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at kolkmeierk@uncw.edu or Mr. Nate Miner at minern@uncw.edu.

Until next time...
Katie
