Bike Safety

Good morning!

I have seen quite a few of you around campus and around the Landing riding your bicycles.  That's why I want to take some time out today to talk about bike safety and etiquette.

It is important to know that you do not have the right-of-way at a crosswalk when you're on your bike.  In order to have the right-of-way, you must dismount from your bike or skateboard and then walk across the crosswalk.  If you were ever hit by a car when crossing the crosswalk on your bike or skateboard, you would be at fault.  The crosswalk is for walking, not riding.  You are considered a moving vehicle when riding a bike or skateboard.  You could also receive a citation from the UNCW Police if they see you riding across a crosswalk when you do not have the right-of-way.

Also important to know is that it's mandatory for you to register your bike with the UNCW police department.  This is mandatory for your of well-being.  If your bike is ever stolen and the police find it, they will be able to return it based on the registration for your bike.  You can register your bike 24 hours a day at the UNCW police department.

Finally, make sure you are parking your bikes on the bike racks and not on trees or light posts.  Proper bike lock-up is on the racks provided for you and not any other piece of university property.

If you ever have any questions, please free to ask me or a UNCW police officer.

Until next time...
Katie
